    Mentoring

Let me give you some practical advice on what you can expect by choosing a forensic science career. How much do you really know about it? What is your "why?" Do you want to help people? If you are early in your career, do you find your work interesting? Would you like to join a professional organization? Do your coworkers get along? Is there a sense of pride in the organization? Do you feel like you are being heard? Let's see what I can do to help you answer your questions.

Training and working in a forensic laboratory

Your lab should have a training program, which may combine reading assignments, hands on exercises with practice samples, a competency test, oral and/or written exam and a mock trial. You might be part of a group of trainees, or a single hire. Do you understand what you've been told to expect? Do you feel comfortable asking questions if you don't understand? I can give you insight on how to navigate this process.

    Understanding forensic lab operations

Do you know what goes on beyond the lab bench? The difference between technical and administrative issues? Grant funding? Accreditation? Forensic oversight or regulatory commissions? Who are the stakeholders for your lab? How are their expectations managed? Is the lab public or private? Does it fall under a Health Department, Medical Examiner or Law Enforcement Agency? There are many different types of lab configurations - I can help identify similarities and differences.

Sample topics include: DNA analysis • Mass fatality response (9/11; American Airlines Flight 587; COVID-19) • Expert witness testimony • Careers in forensic science. Courses will offer a structured learning opportunity based on my personal experiences. Courses would include numerous topics such as those seen above and on this website and can have a wide or narrow focus.

    Case reviews and consultations

These sessions focus on helping clients understand technical or administrative concepts applied when analyzing a forensic case. Available materials are reviewed, conclusions are identified, and areas requiring clarification or additional documentation are outlined. The purpose is to give attorneys or investigators a clear view of the technical and administrative landscape so they can make informed decisions about next steps.
